1963 Imperial LeBaron
1963 Imperial LeBaron
I bought this car from a close friend of mine in Soddy-Daisy, TN. He originally purchased it to use as a parts car, but we decided it was too complete to start tearing apart. So, with lots of work in his garage, we got it back on the road and I made the two and a half hour trip back home.
Carburetor
The first thing we did was rebuild the carburetor. It looked like it had been sitting outside for several years. There was green moss growing inside it. Never seen one that bad before. But, it came around after lots of cleaning!
Ignition
We then replaced all of the ignition components, including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, points, condenser, and coil.
Brakes
This was probably the biggest portion of the whole ordeal. We went through every bit of the brakes. Replaced all of the wear parts and flushed out the lines so that we could use DOT5 fluid. That definetly makes a huge difference, especially in the long run!
Paint
We couldn't believe how well the paint came around with a little polishing.
Tires
I ordered a brand new set of white-wall tires from Ebay and had them shipped to Soddy-Daisy so I could have them put on before the long trip home. The old tires were pretty dry-rotted and wouldn't have been good to make a long trip on.
Maiden Voyage
After finishing the majority of the work to make this car road worthy over two weekends, I finally made the 2½ hour trip home. This car didn't miss a beat and sailed all the way back to Knoxville without any issue.
Cooling Fan
I had a hard time trying to find an appropriately sized fan clutch and after numerous issues, I eventually put an electric fan on the radiator. That solved every issue with that!
Exhaust
I had a new exhaust put on because it had rusted out just past the Y pipe
Air Conditioning
I repaired the HVAC ducting and filled the system with fresh freon and both the front and rear units work!
Starter
The starter went out, so I swapped it with a spare I had which is actually bigger and turns the engine over so much faster. Definitely a great upgrade!
Alternator
The battery wasn't charging correctly, so I had the alternator rebuilt and it's good as new.
Fuel
The old fuel tank is still rotting away and will need to be replaced soon. I just recently had to take apart and clean the carburetur because it had gotten so full of crap.
